U. S. SENATOR BEN NELSON WINS EDUCATORS' SUPPORT
U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson will have the support of the 28,000-member Nebraska State Education Association (NSEA) in his 2012 bid for reelection, according to the organization's president, Nancy Fulton.
"Sen. Nelson has proven himself to be a thoughtful leader who recognizes that education is the key to prosperity in Nebraska and the nation," said Fulton. "He understands that our ability to compete in the global market requires a strong, innovative public education system. He has demonstrated -- both as Governor and now as a U.S. Senator -- a long standing commitment to improving education and making certain our children remain the focus of education programs and policies."
Fulton noted that Sen. Nelson was one of only 10 Senators to vote against No Child Left Behind in 2001.
"Ten years ago, Sen. Nelson said he believed No Child Left Behind would place unfunded, unworkable mandates on states and local school districts to meet inappropriate, one-size-fits-all federal standards," Fulton said. "He has been proven right. In the 10 years since it became law, teachers, parents, Republicans and Democrats have all acknowledged that No Child Left Behind fails our nation's students."
Fulton said Sen. Nelson "shares our belief that America will only remain strong if we invest in our next generation, and that means ensuring students and teachers have the textbooks and tools they need to succeed."
"He has supported Pell Grant and Perkins Loan funding to ensure that America's neediest college-bound students can afford to attend the colleges and universities of their dream," said Fulton. "And as the economy collapsed in 2008-2010, Sen. Nelson fought to save jobs and keep student-to-teacher ratios low."
"Sen. Nelson's firm belief in local control, his willingness to listen to the concerns of teachers, parents and students, and his focus on Nebraska as opposed to partisan Washington politics, align with the focus of the NSEA," said Fulton. "We are pleased to recommend Sen. Nelson for reelection."
NSEA's process for the U.S. Senate recommendation is open to all candidates who complete a questionnaire and are interviewed by the NSEA recommendation committee. The committee is comprised of three NSEA members from each Congressional District; five of the nine members are registered Republicans and four are registered Democrats. The committee, the NSEA Board of Directors, and the National Education Association's PAC Council, all voted to recommend Sen. Nelson for reelection.
Founded in 1867, the Nebraska State Education Association is the state's oldest professional association and represents more than 28,000 teachers, education support professionals, higher education faculty and staff, retired education employees and students preparing to become teachers. NSEA is an affiliate of the 3.2 million-member National Education Association.
